Empowering Nigerian Midwives: Sharing Ancestral Knowledge Globally Welcome to Ikunle Abiyamo, a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the impact of colonization on birthing practices and improving maternal and infant health outcomes. Our mission is to promote inclusive and respectful care by developing hybrid birthing practices through collaboration between traditional midwives in Nigeria and birthing practitioners in the United States. We are excited to share our innovative approach and invite you to join us in empowering Nigerian midwives and sharing ancestral knowledge globally. At Ikunle Abiyamo, we believe in the power of collaboration and the importance of diverse perspectives in improving birthing practices. Our organization empowers traditional midwives to train and support their peers, allowing them to share their ancestral knowledge and expertise. By embracing a collaborative approach with diverse healthcare professionals, we aim to create a comprehensive and culturally sensitive approach to birthing. One of our key initiatives is hosting virtual listening sessions for birth workers in both Nigeria and the United States. These sessions provide a platform for sharing experiences, insights, and challenges faced in the field of birthing. Through these conversations, we hope to foster cross-cultural learning and collaboration, allowing for the exchange of ideas and the development of innovative birthing practices. In addition to virtual sessions, we also conduct on-the-ground observations and provide support for uncolonized practices such as alternative birthing positions and natural tearing. By observing and learning from traditional midwives in Nigeria, we aim to enhance birthing practices and promote inclusive and respectful care. Advocacy is another important aspect of our work. We engage with policymakers to advocate for systemic changes that address the legacy of colonization in birth practices. We believe that by working together with policymakers, we can create a more supportive and inclusive environment for birthing, ensuring that every woman receives the care and respect she deserves. To further our mission, we plan to establish a birth center in Nigeria where US providers can participate in observational learning. This center will serve as a hub for cross-cultural exchange and a platform for celebrating traditional knowledge and diverse birthing practices. By creating a space for learning and collaboration, we hope to elevate traditional midwifery practices and empower Nigerian midwives to share their ancestral knowledge globally. We invite you to explore our website, where you can learn more about our mission, values, and goals. You can also subscribe, donate, and register as members to support our initiatives. Our website features a map highlighting the locations where our team members are working, showcasing the global reach and impact of our organization. The design of our website is warm and inviting, with diverse photos primarily featuring BIPOC individuals. We celebrate the cultural diversity of birthing experiences by incorporating photos of African and African American pregnant women. The curved type design and earth tones create a natural and welcoming feel, reflecting our commitment to inclusive and respectful care. We encourage you to stay updated on our initiatives through our website, where you can find information about upcoming retreats and travel opportunities to learn about different traditional birthing practices. Join us in our mission to empower Nigerian midwives, share ancestral knowledge globally, and create a more inclusive and respectful birthing experience for all. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of mothers and infants, and work towards a future where every birthing experience is celebrated and respected. Join us on this journey of empowerment and collaboration.
