Creating a Birth Center in Nigeria: A Step Towards Systemic Change

Creating a Birth Center in Nigeria: A Step Towards Systemic Change At Ikunle Abiyamo, we are dedicated to improving birthing practices, promoting inclusive care, and addressing the impact of colonization on maternal and infant health outcomes. One of our key initiatives is the establishment of a birth center in Nigeria, which we believe is a crucial step towards systemic change. In this blog post, we want to share with you the importance of this project and how it aligns with our mission and values. The legacy of colonization has had a profound impact on birthing practices in Nigeria and other countries around the world. Traditional midwifery practices, which have been passed down through generations, have been marginalized and even stigmatized. By establishing a birth center in Nigeria, we aim to elevate these traditional practices and empower Nigerian midwives to share their ancestral knowledge globally. The birth center will serve as a space for cross-cultural learning and collaboration. We will invite US providers to participate in observational learning, where they can witness and learn from the traditional birthing practices of Nigerian midwives. This exchange of knowledge and experiences will not only benefit the US providers but also contribute to the validation and celebration of diverse birthing practices. In addition to observational learning, we will also host virtual listening sessions for birth workers in both Nigeria and the United States. These sessions will provide a platform for open dialogue, where participants can share their experiences, challenges, and ideas for improving birthing practices. By fostering collaboration and communication, we hope to create a supportive network of birth workers who can learn from each other and work towards common goals. At Ikunle Abiyamo, we believe in the power of uncolonized practices. We support alternative birthing positions and natural tearing, which have been proven to have positive effects on maternal and infant health outcomes. Through on-the-ground observations and support, we will work with Nigerian midwives to integrate these practices into their care. Advocacy is another important aspect of our work. We aim to engage with policymakers to advocate for systemic changes that prioritize inclusive and respectful care. By highlighting the impact of colonization on birthing practices and presenting evidence-based alternatives, we hope to influence policy decisions that will benefit birthing individuals and their families. We invite you to visit our website to learn more about our mission, values, and goals. You can also find information on how to subscribe, donate, and get involved in our initiatives. Our website features a map that showcases the global reach and impact of our organization, highlighting the locations where our team members are working. We believe that by coming together and embracing diverse birthing practices, we can create a more inclusive and respectful birthing experience for all. Join us on this journey towards systemic change. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of birthing individuals and their families, and promote culturally sensitive and inclusive birthing practices.
